
These programs are designed for high school athletes as an introduction to rowing and for those returning from previous programs. Athletes will train for and race in local competitions
Program Information:
Students must be in full time attendance at a high school and be under 19 years of age on January 1, 2023.
Due to coaching and equipment limitations, we are currently offering this program to students who are attending Guelph High Schools. If you are from another school, please contact the coaches at the above email.
What You’ll Learn:
This program focuses on the Sport For Life Learn-to-Train and Training-to-Train phases of Long Term Athlete Development. Participants will learn:
- Safety rules and navigational protocols
- Fundamental rowing technique
- Learning to be a member of a crew
- Introduction to training for and participating in competitive racing
- Care and maintenance of equipment – racing shell and oars
- Proper boat handling and dock procedures
The High School Rowing Program and associated events are under the control and supervision of the GRC and are not school-supervised events. Participants are insured through their registration with RowOntario and Rowing Canada Aviron.

Spring Session
WHEN: The program runs from mid-April to the CSSRA Regatta in the first week of June
Note: Winter Session attendance is mandatory for Spring Competitive Rowing.
Practices are held Monday to Friday 5:00 to 7:15 am and Saturday 6:00 to 8:15 am
Fall Session
WHEN: Orientation and Information Meeting – TBD
The program is two weeks long with practices held TBD
Winter Session
WHEN: The program runs from mid-January to mid-April
Practices are held Monday to Friday, 6:00 am to 7:15 am at the Guelph YMCA/YWCA.
All participants must register with both the Guelph YMCA/YWCA and the Guelph Rowing Club. YMCA/YWCA registration special for rowers (for those not already members):
- One month $43.51 (includes HST)
- Two months $87.01(includes HST)
- Three months $130.52(includes HST)
- Four months $174.02(includes HST)
With each of the above choices, memberships will be paid in full and automatically end after their term. You will not have to cancel; memberships will simply run out. Membership runs from the date of the month you sign up to the following date of the month, i.e. January 11 to February 11.
If you participated in the 2023 Spring High School or the Fall High School Learn-to-Row programs there will be no charge for winter training, but you still must register for this program. There may be additional fees associated with indoor rowing competitions and tank rowing.
